There are some obvious links in there, but also quite a lot of hidden gems to tickle your fancy. This is invaluable reading to anyone serious about learning more about HTML5 or CSS3. Bonus points to those who read Jon Tang(erine)’s “Preparing For HTML5 With Semantic Class Names”.

The dialog element provides a way to markup conversation in a semantic fashion, and interestingly enough could be used to markup comment threads. Update: It can’t be used to markup comments. Now that sucks.

There’s only one problem I have with it and that’s the fact that it’s order dependant at this stage…and perhaps the fact that it’s spelt “dialog” and not “dialogue”.

By the way, why is it dialog and not dialogue? Is this a concession to US users?

Webdesigner Depot | 5 CSS3 Design Enhancements That You Can Use Today

Webdesigner Depot | 5 CSS3 Design Enhancements That You Can Use Today:
I bet all you kids out there were just wondering what CSS3 you can actually use right this very minute, right? Changes to the Firefox 3.6 nightlies were recently pushed that enabled the brand new HTML5 parsing engine, and support for CSS3 additions such as background-size, gradients, multiple background images and the rem unit.

With exciting progress in competing browsers, it was only a matter of time before a Firefox release with similar momentum in HTML5 and CSS3 features was born.

This video it a tad old now, it was posted after Google I/O...

This video it a tad old now, it was posted after Google I/O conference, but for those who haven’t seen it, it’s a great introduction to herald in the newest features of HTML5. Pings sent using the ping attribute are now to use the text/ping MIME Type when sending the request, which takes the form of a POST request with the body set to “PING”.

I’m wondering how this will all go down with the anti-privacy zealots as well.

All relevant cookie and HTTP authentication headers must be included in the request.
[…] increased support for CSS3, most notably background-size, CSS gradients, multiple background images along with support for the rem unit from the CSS3 values and units module.

It’s great to see the browser vendors being so proactive about implementing these new features even before they’re solid in specification. Often I’m guilty of throwing a curse word or two upon discovery that a browser has waited all the way till recommendation before implementing a particular feature…need I say which browser I was cursing…

This is great news for users and developers alike! Here’s to the run of new specs being included in upcoming releases for all browsers!

Catagen: Native HTML5 Maps Using

Catagen: Native HTML5 Maps Using :
Stumbled upon this today, it’s an interesting implementation of vector maps using the new tag in HTML5. It’s only in its infancy obviously, but as support for the HTML5 specification (and hence the tag) grows across browsers, this should provide a nice alternative to unscalable JavaScript loaded image maps.

CNet: Microsoft Joins HTML5 Standard Fray In Earnest

CNet: Microsoft Joins HTML5 Standard Fray In Earnest:
This is the sort of attitude that will only serve to throw petrol on Mozilla and Google’s fire. Amy Barzdukas, general manager for Internet Explorer, decided to put her mundane input in on the whole HTML5 issue in a July interview.

The support of ratified standards (that Web developers) can use is something that we are extremely supportive of. […] In some cases, it can be premature to start claiming support for standards that are not yet in fact standards.

For what it’s worth though, after reading this latest article I got the sense that Microsoft was just talking the talk as always, but it may be indeed a sign of improvement from the camp still proving to be stuck for direction. Besides, I did have my doubts about how much they would come through in Internet Explorer 8 and indeed was proven wrong; let’s hope the pull something out of the bag this time too. This is one of the few times I’d love to be wrong.

WHATWG: Microdata (Part 1)

WHATWG: Microdata (Part 1):
Specification editor Ian Hickson takes some time out of his busy schedule to drop by the WHATWG blog and giddy us up with some information on the new microdata components of HTML5. The CSSOM View specifications provide DOM interfaces that implement methods used to get the relative sizes and coordinates of varying properties on an HTML document; examples are scroll position and page with and height. In regards to the aims of this specification, CSS3.info have put it best here.

The goal of this specification is therefore not to reinvent the wheel, but rather to define these features in such a way that they can be implemented by all browsers in an identical way.

Regarding my previous post, here’s some proof in an easy...

Regarding my previous post, here’s some proof in an easy to read comic format for those who are visual learners. Cheers to Smashing Magazine for this.

XHTML Is Dead? Nonsense.

I still haven’t quite figured out why everybody is going nuts over the death of XHTML2. Sure, it had some unique and promising features (or should I say feature, sans plural), but in the overall scheme of things it was bound to end up swallowing the same fate as the doomed XHTML1.1; without Internet Explorer on board with support for the application/xhtml+xml mimetype, it’s just plain old HTML. I has always looked forward to the idea that one day we could have namespace support in all the major browsers, but perhaps that will remain a pipe dream until Microsoft step up their game.

Contrary to what now has become popular belief however, XHTML still lives on in the form of XHTML5. Although countless online journals, blogs, and other publications continue to stress that there is still life in XHTML, a simple misconception has spread far and wide to become a bloody panic attack.

It seems I’m not alone as well; Jeffrey Zeldman on why XHTML is not dead:

All of this is to say that XHTML is not dead (XHTML 2 is dead, thank goodness), and HTML5 is not here yet. Between now and 2022, we have plenty of time to learn about HTML5 and contribute to the discussion—and browser makers have 13 years to get it right.

I got sucked into using XHTML markup, and despite saying this as a condescending thing, I quite enjoyed the syntactic cleanliness that it proved to offer over standard HTML. This all around the time that XHTML was the future of the web, I saw the benefit of using a stricter markup over the looser HTML4 syntax. Now that HTML5 is the paved way forward for developers, I will personally be using the XHTML syntax of self closing empty tags and double quoting attributes, but I will be serving my documents as text/html. This is a conscious decision, and proof if you will that XHTML is still very much alive.

There is so much unnecessary stress over the future of XHTML, but HTML5 has been crafted to allow those who prefer the XHTML syntax to use it, and those who don’t to not use it. Just like coffee, you can pick your flavor. Milk and two sugars, please.

Smashing Magazine: Designing A HTML5 Layout From Scratch

Smashing Magazine: Designing A HTML5 Layout From Scratch:
Follow the design finesse of Smashing Magazine and create your first HTML5 layout today.
